15000 Aviation Ave.

The distinctive mid-century office building located in Manhattan Beach, CA was formerly California’s FAA headquarters. As evidenced by its distinctive geometric structure and retro-industrial interior, the building was originally designed in 1958 by the celebrated international architect, César Pelli.

Seeking new occupants, contemporary architecture firm Wolcott commissioned from our studio a series of design proposals for informative temporary graphics targeted at prospective corporate tenants visiting the site.

1. Welcome display

Proposal for a temporary display promoting the building's mid-century design and material finishes with a leaning display of unfinished maple (4) decal-topped plexiglass (2) and a stenciled illustration evoking mid-century "Swiss-style" graphic design

2. Lobby Mural

A full-coverage graphic wall covering on the building's first floor, in a space that would like serve as its lobby. The mural depicts the building's unique - albeit classical for its time - "glass-skin" style facade, which was gaining popularity with mid-century architects practicing the International Style following ground-breaking advancements in construction

3-4. Spec Suite Proposal

An alternate proposal from an early round of design which focused on the different pioneering architectural principles practiced by the building's architect, César Pelli. Among other features, the 200' long mural makes direct reference to the building's glass facade and concrete waffled ceiling, an uncommon sight in today's commercial spaces

5-6. Proposed Gymnasium Graphics

As part of its leasing package, the real-estate group which owned 15000 wanted to see proposals for a suite of full-coverage graphics for the building's gym, which included a yoga room (D), a long corridor leading to two GNRs (E) and an entry enclave (F) directly outside the yoga room

The Spec. Suite Design

The most critical item among the prospective design sites was ultimately a long, unbroken graphical wrap for the Spec. Suite - a mid-century-modernistic island-structure floating in the center of 15000 Aviation’s top floor.

Characterized by three semi-distinct alcoves which are drawn and partitioned by a gently arcing geometry, the Spec. Suite was determined to be the designated site for meeting with prospective tenants. After iterating through a handful of more articulate designs, we landed on a clean, contemporary graphic that underscored the wall’s natural shape, while also spotlighting the building’s iconic facade.
